-Bridging the gap between the resources avaiable and resources needed

Message from the general manager

URGENT! Job Creation Now!

The job opportunity situation in Nepal is urgent. The country has been in lock down from March to June 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This has forced people to discontinue their daily income generating activities, and the majority have no option to work from home.

More than 25% of Nepal’s GDP is from overseas remittances. The pandemic has forced migrant workers to return home and compete for the few job opportunities within the country, which also was the reason for them leaving in the first place. As their families have now lost their main source of income, many have been pushed back into poverty.

Nepal does not have a social welfare system to subsidize them in times of need. People are frustrated and they have started to lose hope. Reports of increased incidents of domestic violence and suicides have been shared. The negative effects of the pandemic are not evenly felt, and it is the poor who experience the greatest financial setbacks. The UN has stated that the pandemic is at risk of wiping out the last 30 years of positive results within development work.

There is a need for job creation in Nepal now.  SHS aim is to create jobs and you can join us by becoming a

Catalyst Donor today.

Job Creation

Bridging the gap... What is "the gap"?

There is a gap between resources needed and resources available.

Many entrepreneurs in Himalaya have good business ideas. However, they are lacking the opportunity to invest or to expand their existing business, due to a lack of funding.

Many young workers would like to earn a living but lack a job opportunity.

Many employers would like to hire, however the job seekers are lacking relevant or sufficient quality skills. Nepal aims to reduce poverty and increase the economic development and scale up the industry, however they lack access to energy. Clean energy.

SHS is bridging the gap between the need for resources and resources available. We act as a catalyser for development with the aim to improve the living conditions of the poor people.

Where are we headed?

The vision of Stiftelsen Hjelp til Selvhjelp (SHS) is to promote development which lead to economic, technological, social and environmental value creation in the Himalayas through investment and consulting on commercial terms.

The ultimate goal is to strengthen the poor part of the population in order to live their lives in dignity through employment, increased income and improved access to services. We carry out our work in synergy with HimalPartners great efforts in Himalaya within civil society and development work.

Entrepreneurs building their own future

The Gap: Access to Capital  Entrepreneurs Building Their Own Future!

A man has a sewing machine and sells his tailoring services to his neighbors. He does his job well and gains a good reputation. The demand exceeds his ability to supply. However, his capital and liquidity are not enough to invest in a new and more efficient sewing machine or to hire an assistant. A loan is inconceivable when he has no equity. He owns nothing of value.  SESI-Nepal would give him a loan and the opportunity to expand his business.

A job, is an opportunity to provide for oneself, and one’s family.

If parents have jobs, the likelihood of their children’s ability to go to school increases. With education, there is the chance of getting a job in the future, and of being able to provide for themselves and their families increases.

This is the start of the rise, and a journey out of, the poverty spiral.

SHS is bridging the gap between the need for resources and the available resources in order to realize a business idea, and a loan to get started through SESI-Nepal. SESI-Nepal is in its last phase of registration and will start its loan activities in Kailali.

The facts of the problem

  • Large employment pool

Nepal has a young population with 63.7% of the total population below the age of 30.

  • High unemployment

The unemployment rate for youth aged 15-29 is 19.2%. There is a gap between job seeker and job abilities.

  • Young population

Over 400 000 young people are estimated to enter the labor force every year. This explains the increasing problem of youth migration for jobs abroad.

  • High emigration rate

Brain drain and drain of muscle power leaves Nepal in a vulnerable situation, causing critical quality manpower deficit for development of the country.

  • Untapped skill

Nepal is struggling to fight underemployed or the so-called working poor, which is the underuse of a worker. (the skills of the worker is not properly made us of, the worker is involuntarily working part-time, or the worker is left idle.)

  • Subpar working conditions

An important part of the employment challenge is to raise the productivity and earnings of the underemployed workers and improve their working conditions.

Employment can be created in various ways:
